Actors and performers Lina Rastokaitė and Jokūbas Bareikis, accompanied by a fantastic team of musicians, will ensure that one of the most prominent stages of maestro Vytautas Kernagis's work sounds with new colors, without losing his characteristic self-irony, civic-mindedness, conversations with the audience, and all his beloved melodies.
According to Jacob, this project naturally continues his previous works dedicated to the work of Vytautas Kernagis.
"The first project was called "Legend Vytautas Kernagis. Stories and Songs" - it was like telling the story of the maestro's life, accompanied by his original songs from different stages of his work, - says the actor. - The project was a great success, so naturally I wanted to continue. This is how "The Code of Vytautas Kernagis" was born, in which I tried to look at the work through values, which, in my opinion, were like unwritten rules of life for Kernagis himself, his code - humanity, humor, freedom, irony, love for Lithuania."
According to the project creator, “Cabaret among the Millstones” allowed him to talk about things that could not be talked about freely at that time in a humorous and satirical way. This creative stage of V. Kernagis was like a kind of protest, a move against the system, a subtle expression of love for Lithuania, using humor and irony – he called the then political system and its attempt to deal with people “millstones”. “Cabaret among the Millstones” was an ideal combination: on the one hand, a fun evening, a concert, and on the other, an important mission to prevent people from forgetting.
When asked which song from this project is the most memorable to him, Jokūbas Bareikis singles out the song "Colorado Beetles".
"In my opinion, this is a brilliant work. Soviet propaganda claimed that the Colorado potato beetles were a US attempt to destroy USSR agriculture. They said that the US special services deliberately dropped them on the fields to cause famine. And here we must pay tribute to the genius of V. Kernag, who nonsense "They simply turned it around masterfully - people began to associate the Colorado potato beetle not with Americans, but specifically with the Soviet regime, which, like an invasive pest, is destroying our identity."
According to the creators, not only the musical content, but also the atmosphere will be important in the concert "Cabaret among the Mills". A cabaret scenography is being created especially for this performance, which will playfully combine Retro and today's aesthetics: glowing accents and lighting design will create a space where artists will be free to create a festive atmosphere, while also balancing nostalgia and sharp humor.
"Cabaret itself dictates a light, fun atmosphere. The script is still being written, but we will not stray from the idea of a man among the millstones. And today we have our own realities, our own "millstones" that turn and grind something."
